This monograph covers the significance of photography in the new disciplines of ethnography and physical anthropology in the Russian imperial context. It analyses to what extent photographic images contributed to the construction of imagined ethnic communities and the production of ethnographic knowledge, as well as to what extent photography served as a strategy for the exploration and appropriation of foreign peoples. Which type of photographic representation of non-Russian peoples was considered by historical actors as scientifically relevant and how this evolved is one of the leading questions.
