1845 schon setzte Richard Wagner sich mit der Gralslegende auseinander, 1877 verfasste er das Textbuch, danach begann er mit der Komposition, die er als sein "Opus ultimum" bezeichnete. 1882 wurde das Bühnenweihfestspiel in Bayreuth uraufgeführt. Das Textbuch folgt der Erstausgabe, eigenhändige Korrekturen von Wagner sind berücksichtigt, die Varianten der Partitur entstammen der kritischen Richard-Wagner-Ausgabe.
