Diabetes or diabetes mellitus (DM) refers to a group of metabolic disorders in which high blood sugar levels persist in the body over a prolonged time period. It is caused when an insufficient quantity of insulin is produced by the pancreas or the body cells do not respond in a normal way to the insulin. Diabetes can be of 3 main types- Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes.
