Description
After the Revolution of Impressionism, painters had to search for new ways to carry the new ideas forward. This fine book illustrates the high points of that search with a selection of glorious pictures. Van Gogh chose to paint in bright, flat shades in such paintings as “ The Arena at Arles” and Cezanne found an impressive way of describing the structure of the landscape in “ Mont Ste Victoire.” At the same time Seurat was working out a formula for Impressionist theories by painting in dots in such pictures as “Bathing at Asnieres.” Then there were the Fauves, headed by Matisse, whose “Game of Boules” is included here, as is Picasso’s experiment with a structured Cubist approach, “Demoiselles d’ Avignon.”
