Prussia: Myth and Reality

Prussia: Myth and Reality

0 - Default Title
Description
In the world at large, Prussia has usually been regarded as the villain of German history, and as a bearer of militarism and reaction. In Germany on the other hand, the Prussian ethos has always been much admired and even now, when Prussia has disappeared from the map some Germans still cherish a nostalgia for the Prussian virtues of order, duty and social responsibility. This book, the first modern account in English of Prussia's rise and fall, tries to present a balanced view of the Prussian role in German history. It tells how the Hohenzollern rulers fashioned a state out of the haphazard collection of territories which dynastic accident played into their hands. Special attention is given to the relationship between Prussia and the German national movement in the 19th century and to Prussia's place in the evolution of German culture and ideas. After 1870 Prussia survived more as a myth than a reality. The book shows how men as diverse as Adolf Hitler and Oswald Spengler used the myth in their own way and for their own ends.
