Description
This possibility reminds us that the Turk himself is a very recent arrival in Europe. While Columbus was playing as a boy on the Wharves and piers of stately Genoa, pre wring himself for his discovery of America, the cannon of Mahomet I were breaching the walls of Constantinople. That success of 1453 A. D., terminated the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire, after its flag had braved a thousand years the battle and the breeze; an empire that had been possessed of a singular and most inter esting coinage.
Only of late years has public attention been directed to these issues.
