TINKIE AND THE CAVE OF SHADOWS
0 - Default Title
Description
This, the first book of a series, "Tinkie and the Cave of Shadows," sets the scene with Tinkie and Lily about to embark on their first time-traveling adventure together: down the painted caves of Lascaux, France, twenty thousand years ago. Tinkie's cousin, Dinkie, will join for the trip - the only catch: Dinkie is terrified of the dark. Tinkie's plan: to use the magic, time-traveling tablet to help her cousin overcome his fear in a place where beauty existed in the dark, and paintings in caves were made by all ages - including children.
With a lot of encouragement, Dinkie makes it to Lascaux with Tinkie and Lily. Landing in the famous "Hall of Bulls," each of the friends can't help but be mesmerized by the cave paintings all around them. Learning more about the time they've landed in, Dinkie soon decides his fear of being eaten by a bison outside is greater than his fear of the dark.
With the added promise of discovering a unicorn in the cave paintings, off he goes, into the dark, and the deepest of caves. Leaving Tinkie and Lily to make stencils of their hands, just as Lily's ancestors would have done many thousands of years before, Dinkie befriends a Stone Age girl and they go into the caves together, painting the walls - and each other.Meanwhile, back in the Hall of Bulls, the other early modern humans and their wolf-like canine have returned from an unsuccessful day hunting and gathering. Despite Lily's attempts to distract them with shadow plays, they are tired - and hungry - it's looking like Tinkie might be on the menu! Who will save the day?
From their dorm room at Oxford University to places all over the world, Tinkie and friends discover the most beautiful treasures human beings have ever created - and learn how to overcome a very real challenge or fear along the way.
Both written and illustrated by Oxford scholars, "Tinkie and the Cave of Shadows" is a researched, thought-provoking, and at times downright funny read. It is the first in a series of adventures around the world and through time, for children to learn about our shared humanity, their own creativity, and true global identity.
