Description
For the past two years DuoOud (Mehdi Habbab and Smadj ) have been touring the world, performing the music from their acclaimed first album, "Wild Serenade". This caught the public s imagination with its mix of the traditional sounds of the oud, played by both musicians, and contemporary electronica, supplied by Smadj via his laptop. "Sakat" has its roots in a tural exchange programme that gave Mehdi and Smadj the opportunity to it the Yemen. There they were introduced to renowned musicians: Abdulatif Yagoub, a singer and oud player, and Ahmed Taher, who plays the mismar, a wind instrument with a double reed. Delighted with their encounter with the two musicians and their percussionists, Mehdi and Smadj made several its, recording traditional repertoire with them. Back in Paris their objective was to modernize a repertoire that, in contrast to many other Arabic musical styles, had avoided adulteration by cheesy Western pop sounds. Mehdi and Smadj artfully identified the essence of the music, accenting a partiar technique on the oud or mismar, revealing hidden grooves and haunting refrains. Making minor modifications to harmonies and arrangements, the final touch was to add the trum of jazz musician Eric Truffaz to "Illhdah al Aakerh."
