The photographs taken by Josef Wolfgang Mayer in the summer of 1990 show the Berlin Wall, its breaches and remains. The photographs are photographed as triptychs, thus expanding the field of vision to a panorama. The book follows the principle, consists only of fold-out pages and thus creates ever new moments of surprise when a new landscape opens up before the eyes of the viewer, transforming the past into the future. Innumerable details tell old and new stories of these stormy days, hold the memories. The dangers that once emanated from this place can still be felt in some of the shots, while at the same time people and vehicles make their way through improvised transitions and reconnected streets. Fallow land emerges as free architectural forms between the burst seams of stone and barbed wire. The summer of freedom has begun.
