Nel 1849 Dostoevskij, che faceva parte di un circolo di giovani intellettuali di tendenze socialiste, fu arrestato dalla polizia zarista e, dopo otto mesi di reclusione, venne condannato a morte. Successivamente questa pena fu commutata in quattro anni di lavori forzati in Siberia, a Omsk, dove il suo fisico fu segnato per sempre. Questo libro è la cronaca fedele di quel periodo di deportazione, dei luoghi conosciuti e dei personaggi incontrati.
