Excerpt from A Guide to the Study of the United States of America<br/><br/>The usual practice of annotating individual titles has been varied in some sections by the substitution of one headnote under the author's name, without additional annotations for his individual works unless the range of these was too great to be covered in a headnote. Interest has thus been focused on the total contribution of the writer, and reiteration of statements applicable to all or nearly all his books has been eliminated. Chapters that illustrate this method of approach are those on Literature and Biography and Autobiography, while the largest sections of the chapters on Travel and Travelers and Philosophy and Psychology have been treated in the same way. A similar device has been employed in some cases when the use of a headnote following the title of a long series of books has made it un necessary to annotate the separate publications that make up the series, as in the cases of Original Narratives of Early American History and the readings selected by the Department of American Studies of Amherst College, Problems in American Civilization.
