Certains cambriolages sont tellement impossibles que même le légendaire John Dortmunder n'y croit pas. Celui que projette Eppick, un ancien flic tenace, appartient à cette catégorie : voler un jeu d'échecs en or de 500 kilos, barricadé dans la chambre forte souterraine d'une banque inexpugnable.
