Maurice Ravel considered himself a composer of reason rather than heart; to him, the creative process was an intellectual charade and not the fruit of inspiration. With the precision of a Swiss clockmaker (his father was Swiss), he wrote pieces – some devilishly difficult to perform – which left players with hardly any room for their own interpretation, still less for improvisation. Ravel must have kept an immense distance towards his own work; on his opus magnum he commented thusly: “Bolero is the only remarkable piece of art I have managed to create. Alas, it contains no music. It is but an elaborate symphonic tapestry.” Dominik Wania’s debut album is cut from the same cloth. It has been awaited by all those keeping track of this excellent young pianist’s musical development. It is not by chance that his phonographic debut revolves around Ravel. It is also probably not by chance that it refers to a single composition by the French impressionist, namely to Miroirs – a miniature written for piano between 1904–1905 and dedicated to members of Société des Apaches, the famous French avant-garde group of whom Ravel was one. Yes, there is jazz in Ravel, and Wania’s playing dissipates any doubts we might have had about it, even though his bravura will not hide from an observant listener certain motives, phrases, harmonies, or structures we know from Ravel’s scores. These, however, serve only as a pretext, an inspiration, a point of departure and a component of his musical erudition. They fortunately direct the pianist towards a dazzling and daring performance. No quotes or paraphrasing involved.
