Le présent volume rassemble une série d'articles principalement (mais, pas seulement) issus des communications présentées dans le cadre du colloque international A Danubio ad Gothiam, organisé à Lille, Villeneuve d'Ascq et Bavay, par le projet DANUBIUS (Université de Lille / unité de recherche HALMA-UMR 8164), du 24 au 27 novembre 2021. L'objectif de cette rencontre était de dialoguer autour du processus de christianisation dans la partie orientale du Bas-Danube romain, en comparaison avec une région voisine hors de l'Empire, que l'on surnommait alors Gothia, à savoir la côte nord-ouest de la mer Noire avec la Crimée. Les études de cas présentées ici, dont certaines s'appuient sur de nouvelles recherches archéologiques, permettent de mieux comprendre la diffusion du christianisme à l'une des extrémités nord du monde romain.

The christianization of the north-western black sea during late antiquity

This volume brings together a series of chapters, mainly (but not only) from papers presented at the A Danubio ad Gothiam International Conference, organized in Lille, Villeneuve d'Ascq, and Bavay, by the DanubiusProject (University of Lille / HALMA-UMR 8164 Research Center), from the 24th to the 27th of November 2021. The aim of this meeting was to discuss the process of Christianization in the eastern part of the Roman Lower Danube, in comparison with a neighbouring region outside the Empire, which was then nicknamed Gothia, namely the north-west coast of the Black Sea with Crimea. The case studies presented here, some of which are based on new archaeological research, provide a better understanding of the spread of Christianity in one of the northern edges of the Roman world.

Rome and after in Central and Eastern Europe

This multilingual and interdisciplinary series provides an exciting forum for research into the archaeology, history, and art history of the Danubian world and Balkan Peninsula. Covering a period that begins at the end of the third century bc with the expansion eastwards of the Roman Republic and the conquest of Illyria, and continues up to the confirmation of the 'barbarian hegemonies in the Balkans in the eighth century ad, the RomA series encourages the publication of innovative research into a part of Europe that both underwent, and was central to, many major evolutions and changes. Volumes in the series are thus of interest to Roman specialists, as well as to scholars of the Early Byzantine and Medieval world. The broad geographical focus of the series is on an area comprising the Danubian provinces of the Roman Empire, from present-day southern Germany to eastern Romania, together with the neighbouring central Balkan provinces ; but research that explores wider cultural contact with surrounding regions including Italy, Epirus, Achaia, and lauric Chersonese is also encouraged.
