The Deepest Desire

0 - Default Title
Description
The Deepest Desire, soprano Joyce DiDonato's solo recital debut album, focuses on songs by American composers. In addition to works by Bernstein and Copland, the album features the world premiere recording of Jake Heggie's song cycle The Deepest Desire, which sets meditations written by Sister Helen Prejean. Prejean began a prison ministry in 1981 when she dedicated her life to the poor of New Orleans. While living in the St. Thomas housing project, she became pen pals with Patrick Sonnier, convicted killer of two teenagers, sentenced to die in the electric chair of Louisiana's Angola State Prison. Upon Sonnier's request, Sister Helen repeatedly visited him as his spiritual advisor. In doing so, her eyes were opened to the execution process. Prejean described her experiences in Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States - a book that became an international best-seller, was nominated for a 1993 Pulitzer Prize, and won a Oscar for the film version directed by Tim Robbins. In 2002, DiDonato sang the role of Sister Helen in Heggie's opera version of Dead Man Walking, which was written for the San Francisco Opera and premiered in 2000.
