Ma¿khaka: A Sanskrit Genius

- Default Title
Description
The book entitled "Mäkhaka: A Sanskrit Genius (Reflexion of the ¿r¿kä¿hacarita and the Mäkhako¿a)" focuses on the literary expertise of Mäkhaka, exhibited through his monumental works viz. the ¿r¿kä¿hacarita (¿KC) and the Mäkhako¿a (MK).The ¿KC is a standard mah¿k¿vya from the standpoint of the canons laid down for a mah¿k¿vya by the poeticians. Mah¿kavir¿jar¿j¿nakär¿mäkhaka, one of the foremost poets of Kashmir composed the ¿KC during A.D.1136-1142, consisting of twenty five cantos. It describes the destruction of the three cities of gold, silver and iron, in the sky, air and earth, built for the demons by May¿sura. Later, these cities were burnt to ashes, along with the demons inhabiting therein by Lord ¿iva, at the behest of the gods. The ¿KC proves the fact that Mäkhaka has full command on Sanskrit language and has complete capability to write a mah¿k¿vya. Again, the Mäkhako¿a or the Anek¿rthako¿a is a ko¿a text of homonymous words. It is an important hand-book on lexicography. Thus, endowed with the title Kar¿ik¿ramäkha, Mäkhaka occupies a unique place in the history of Sanskrit literature and truly deserves to be called a Sanskrit genius for the merits of his works.
