She stands up for the Rights of immigrant mineworkers, but her goodwill is all for nothing. Back in England, she is shocked to hear of the Boer War in South Africa and she is moved by the plight of the mothers and children in the camps. She leaves for South Africa and is shocked what she finds there. She tries to help where she can, but has inadequate finances available to improve the conditions in the camps. Returning to England, she tries to rally aide via political channels, but the British Government is unwilling to assist. Emily must overcome many obstacles in her path, but it is uncertain whether she has yet found her true purpose. Women and children succumbed to diseases and malnutrition in the camps. Conditions did improve, due mostly to the efforts of Emily Hobhouse in bringing their plight to the attention of Europe and the British public. For her trouble she was vilified by the English press, ignored by the British government and is counted a heroine in South Africa. ...That Englishwoman ( That English Woman )
