Description
The Popol Vuh is the creation story according to the Quiche Maya, of the region now called Guatemala and southern Mexico. It is regarded as an account of "the ancient world" and of the creation of the world. It tells of the exploits of the hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque in the underworld and their triumph over the Lords of Death, the creation of animals and humans. The arrival of Europeans to the land brought the call to destroy the written copies of Popol Vuh. Fortunately, in the late 1800's texts were rediscovered. Many referred to Popol Vuh as "The Mayan Bible." Scholars and artists such as Diego Rivera celebrated the once lost stories.
This is the first English, Spanish, and Yucatec Maya trilingual children's version of Popol Vuh. Also known as "The Book of the People."
