Description
Released on ex-Faith No More singer Mike Patton's label, it's clear that the long-playing debut Inner Scratch Demons is no ordinary turntable odyssey. And, from the off, this collection of greatest skits from Def's series of "Hemplord" mixtapes takes a perverse pleasure in undercutting the wow and flutter turntablist dynamics with callous humour. Like a sly satire on the futile adolescent fixations of rap-jock bands, opening track "Crybaby" matches soaring rock guitar samples with, you guessed it, the wails of a frustrated nipper. "Story of the 80s" reduces American fixation with a dead-end decade to a mighty wah of collaged cheesy synths. "Mexican Disses" overlays insults from language training tape before the helium-toned Z-Man delivers "I Like It You Like It" with psychotic intensity. On "Records and Tapes", Def scales a zither and mounts a kazoo on phased beats to induce that disorientated helter-skelter feel. And throughout this alarming record he laces druggy beats, bone-shaking bass and hiss-encrusted rock riffs with his titanium scratches. Levels are stressed-out and pushed to the max like an nth generation copy of a hot-fingered mixtape. This new sound from the in-sound is second-hand brand new. --Chris Campion
