Attorno alla figura del poeta medievale tedesco Neidhartvon Reuental si formò, a partire dal XIII secolo, una "leggenda" caratterizzata da serialità, multimedialità, polisemia e incentrata sull'ostilità tra il protagonista e i contadini, della quale la beffa della violetta costituisce l'episodio centrale. Di questa leggenda i "drammi di Neidhart", composti tra XIV e XVI secolo, costituiscono i prodotti letterari più interessanti, perché, analogamente ad alcuni moderni fenomeni di intrattenimento 'popolare', mostrano strategie intese, da un lato, a soddisfare i gusti più rozzi degli spettatori, dall'altro a influenzare il loro comportamento sociale. Per la prima volta i principali drammi di questo complesso sono resi accessibili in traduzione italiana, corredata di testo a fronte filologicamente accurato, di esaurienti introduzioni e apparati esplicativi.
