Il Novecento ha permesso di superare una visione rigida e ristretta dei rapporti fra teatro e letteratura, riassumibile in buona sostanza nella formula: il teatro consiste (esclusivamente) nella rappresentazione di testi drammatici. La vera e propria "esplosione" a cui la contemporaneità ha sottoposto questi rapporti ha permesso di svelare la ricchezza delle relazioni esistenti fra questi due campi dell'arte e dell'immaginario, agendo retroattivamente anche sulla loro comprensione storica.
