Ils sont d'avant la Chute, en quelque sorte : aussi impudiques et dévêtus, aussi dépourvus de malice qu'Adam et Ève au Paradis. Ils ignorent le retour sur soi qui ne tardera pourtant pas avec l'humanisme gothique. Pour l'instant, chacun exerce sa fonction propre, qui est d'inspirer le passant en rythmant sa déambulation dans l'espace sacré.
