Description
The work was composed for the music festival in southern California from which it takes its name, and was performed there in 1991 by the Scottish Festival Orchestra. The instrumentation is surprisingly simple compared with the works for which Davies is best known: it includes a modest group of woodwinds, a handful of brass, and strings. The musical material of the Ojai Festival Overture circles around three basic ideas: a lively melody heard at the beginning in the upper strings, a countermelody to the initial string tune that eventually establishes itself independently in the woodwinds, and a chordal figure in the winds and brass. These ideas are transformed and juxtaposed, with the various combinations strung together by a short, pointed motive in the timpani. The harmonic trajectory of the work traces a circuitous path across this melodic terrain from C sharp minor to F sharp major.
