Description
Best known for his work in the genres of film music and opera, an ever-important part of Glass' compositional output is his symphonic works. His newly-completed Symphony No. 5 premiered to rave reviews at last summer's Salzburg Festival, and his latest Nonesuch release covers his work in both operatic and symphonic forms, beginning with the world premiere recording of his Symphony No. 3 Premiered in 1995, the work is a compact 4-movement string symphony performed by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and commissioned by Dennis Russell Davies - featured conductor on the entire recording, and longtime advocate of the composer's work, "The Voyage" - a commission from the Metropolitan Opera for the Columbus anniversary in 1992 - is a three-act opera with libretto by David Henry Hwang ("M. Butterfly"). The excerpt is an instrumental interlude, performed by the Vienna Radio Symphony. Written in 1987 to commemorate a scientific experiment that heralded the transition from 19th century physics to modern research, "The Light" is a musical portrait of the scientists Michelson and Morley, and an homage to their historic work, also performed by the Vienna players. Rounding out the set are two excerpts from Robert Wilson's "the CIVIL warS", previously released on Nonesuch as part of the work's Rome Section, last year.
