Description
Matteo Carcassi (1792-1853) was a traveling virtuoso and compose who spent much of his life in Paris, the center of guitar activity at the time. His method (Op. 59) was accompanied by these 25 studies (Op. 60). Although no photograph of first edition has survived, an 1851 edition-recently published by Chanterelle-seems to have had his approval. I worked from that and from an early Schott edition, kindly made available to me by Charles Wolzien of the American Music Center, University of Colorado at Boulder. The studies have been continually republished since that early version; in fact, they ar Carcassi's only compositions to have achieved longevity. The estudios are intelligently graded and are very methodical in their introduction of various fundamental techniques. In 1914, Miguel Llobet, one of Francisco Tarrega's main disciples and certainly a strong influence on Segovia, edited Carcassi's studies. That edition presents none of the discrepancies of Segovia/Sor, since it differs only slightly with the earliest know version. Llobet's work has taken on a life of it's own, as has Sergovia's Sor collection, and it remains the most popular of the many editions of Carcassi's etudes. One of my goals in doing this book and recording project was to reveal that studies are not abstract technical exercise, but pieces that focus on one or more technical issues. In turn these technical issues are best solved when understood as an expressive means for the music. Estudios are steps of rituals of passage in learning to use technique for musical ends: They are intense lessons in focusing your expressive tools. after mastering the concentrated technical issues in these studies, you'll be ready for the varied technical demands of musical life.
