La Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles présente huit toiles de Van Gogh réalisées de 1884 à 1890. Six d'entre elles proviennent de la collection de l'industriel suisse Emil Georg Bührle, ce passionné d'art particulièrement touché par le peintre néerlandais.

Si cette sélection d'oeuvres confirme la modernité apportée par Van Gogh aux genres traditionnels du portrait, de la nature morte et du paysage, tout comme l'évolution de son rapport à la couleur ou au cadrage, elle met aussi en lumière son tempérament qui allie étrangeté et sincérité, calme et exaltation ; produisant ce point de vue si inhabituel et cette empreinte si caractéristique.

Les analyses approfondies de deux chercheurs en histoire de l'art spécialistes de Van Gogh, David Misteli et Alex Weintraub, apportent un éclairage novateur sur sa vision très personnelle du réalisme dans Les Ponts d'Asnières et Autoportrait - deux oeuvres peintes durant son séjour parisien de 1887 -, ainsi que sur sa volonté de représentation du monde « en fleur » à travers Branches de marronniers en fleur, l'une de ses dernières toiles, peinte à Auvers-sur-Oise en 1890.

The Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles presents eight canvases by Van Gogh painted between 1884 and 1890. Six of them come from the collection of Swiss industrialist and lifelong art lover Emil Georg Bührle, who found the Dutch artist's works particularly affecting.

This selection of paintings attests to the modernity that Van Gogh brought to the traditional genres of portraiture, still life and landscape, and equally to the evolution of his relationship with colour and composition. It thereby also provides an insight into the artist's temperament, which combines strangeness and sincerity, calm and exaltation to produce such an unusual perspective in such a characteristic manner.

The in-depth analyses by two art-history scholars specialising in Van Gogh, David Misteli and Alex Weintraub, shed an innovative light on the artist's very personal vision of realism in Bridges Across the Seine at Asnières and Self-Portrait - both executed in 1887 in Paris - and on Vincent's desire to portray the world « in flower » through Blossoming Chestnut Branches, one of his very last canvases, painted in 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise.
