Caerphilly Castle (CADW Guidebooks)

- Default Title
Description
Caerphilly Castle is one of the largest castles in Europe, and when it was built by ‘Red’ Gilbert de Clare, the lord of Glamorgan, in the later thirteenth century it was at the cutting edge of military technology. Its concentric — wall within walls — design and extensive water defences made it a powerful stronghold, but it also contained comfortable apartments, an impressive great hall, and other features that were essential to life in a noble household in the Middle Ages. The 48-page guidebook surveys the castle’s eventful history from its beginnings in 1268 to its reconstruction by the fourth marquess of Bute in the early twentieth century, and helps the visitor understand the extensive and fascinating remains with the help of reconstruction drawings, maps and plans and a host of stunning images.
