Description
This book is the second in a series of three, regarding the emancipation events of July 3, 1848 on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. This book brings to life the trial testimony of the enslaved population (including those who made the ultimate sacrifice) and were executed by the Danish authorities. Of the 17 who were ultimately sentenced to death, eight were executed and the remaining nine were pardoned and sent back to their respective plantations. Most would agree, all should have been pardoned, particularly since no mayhem, mutilation and/or capital crimes were committed by them. It is absolutely fascinating to hear the voices of the enslaved population themselves, which was rarely done during this era.
We also found out what the "outside world" had to say about us which were included in the numerous newspaper articles written about our emancipation events of 1848.
