Description
Berlin-based photographer Friederike von Rauch portrays landscapes and buildings with her analogue camera. In her latest project, she uses poetic, clear images to document the restoration of the Neues Museum, the centrepiece of Berlin's Museum Island, which was severely destroyed during the Second World War. The British architect David Chipperfield was entrusted with the task of transforming the ruins back into a functioning museum. The spectacular result of his initially controversial designs proves the architect right. Taking a conservationist approach, Chipperfield has succeeded in preserving the late classicist heritage while creating modern spaces of timeless elegance. Friederike von Rauch accompanies the exciting final phase of the renovation, sensing Chipperfield's concern to reveal the fractures of contemporary history and reconcile them with the demands on a museum of today.
