Description
Originally from Oklahoma but based in Hollywood during his prime years, Donnell "Spade" Cooley was a singing cowboy (at one time a stand in for Roy Rogers) and fiddle-playing band leader who, after winning a Battle Of The Bands over Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys in the early 1940s, declared himself to be 'The King Of Western Swing'. Boosted by a long-running ballroom residency, numerous movie appearances and regular radio and TV broadcasts, he recorded prolifically and successfully during the second half of the '40s, his band featuring several lively singers including Tex Williams, who would go on to stardom in his own right. This double CD of 52 tracks opens with Cooley's first recordings with Cal Shrum's Rhythm Rangers in 1941 and then covers all of his essential recordings from the height of his career through to 1952. Authoritatively annotated with an illustrated 16 page booklet it is a must for all fans of Western Swing.
