The area of water surface in our State is composed, principally, almost exclusively, of streams possessing but few deep fresh water lakes. The kind of fish, which have a peiar interest for the city of Erie, and have the greatest commercial value, is the white fish, (coregonus Albus,) the most valuable fresh water variety ranging geographically through all the great lakes of the North, and more recently introduced, with good pros peets of success, into some of the inland lakes of a few of the Northern States, where the depth of water and temperature are peiarly suitable to their increase in size as well as in numbers.
