Daniel Boudinet : le temps de la couleur

Disparu trop tôt, en 1990, à l'âge de 45 ans, Daniel Boudinet - dont le fonds fut donné à l'État par sa famille un an après sa mort - a été injustement oublié. De son vivant, pourtant, ce jeune artiste passionné par les expérimentations photographiques expose dans les meilleures galeries et institutions artistiques françaises, entre dans de prestigieuses collections, est célébré par des intellectuels aussi importants que Roland Barthes ou le critique d'art Bernard Lamarche-Vadel.

Bien qu'il ait produit l'essentiel de son travail en noir et blanc, c'est dans le domaine de la couleur que, au long des années 1970 et 1980, Boudinet s'est montré le plus novateur. Ses séries nocturnes, d'une grande sobriété, affirment la primauté des choix esthétiques sur les potentialités techniques du médium photographique. Ceci est d'autant plus remarquable à une époque où le noir et blanc domine la discipline aussi bien du côté de la presse, pour des motifs économiques, que des artistes, inscrits dans une tradition historique fondée sur la géométrie, la déclinaison des gris et l'élaboration des contrastes.

Au-delà du parcours d'un artiste dont la palette, à l'instar de ses contemporains John Batho et Luigi Ghirri, se distingue de celle des grands coloristes américains, cette redécouverte se veut l'occasion d'une réflexion sur la place et l'histoire de la couleur en photographie, notamment européenne.

Daniel Boudinet died in 1990, aged only 45. During his too-brief career this young, passionately experimental photographer exhibited in France's foremost galleries and art institutions, found a place in prestigious private collections, and was praised by such leading intellectuals as Roland Barthes and art critic Bernard Lamarche-Vadel. A year after his death, his oeuvre and private collection were donated to the French state by his family ; yet since then he has been unjustly forgotten.

Although the bulk of his work was in black and white, colour was the field in which, throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Boudinet emerged as a true innovator. Models of restraint, his nocturnal series assert the primacy of aesthetic choices over the medium's technical potential. These choices were all the more remarkable because at the time black and white dominated both the press - for economic reasons - and the output of artists who remained true to a tradition based on geometric forms, nuances of grey and a play on contrast.

This fresh look at the life and times of an artist who, like his contemporaries John Batho and Luigi Ghirri, explored a palette quite different from that of the great American colourists, provides an opportunity to reflect on the role and history of colour in photography, especially in Europe.
