Quando la terra frana, la ragazza vede un morto che la guarda dal buco. È un partigiano. Lei gli sottrae una foto che conserverà per quarantacinque anni. Nel 1990, tre giovani interessati alla storia della loro valle nelle Prealpi Vicentine, scavano in quel buco e in quei ricordi. Non ne uscirà nulla di buono: sospetti, interrogativi, spie e vendette. Un moderno confronto tra fascisti e partigiani dove l'intrecciarsi di episodi della Resistenza vicentina con le rappresaglie del presente fa smarrire il senso del tempo. Inseguendo queste risposte, i ragazzi intravedono delle figure nei boschi. Fascisti e partigiani, forse. O gli esseri da cui sono stati messi in guardia: orchi, anguane, streghe. O quelle ombre che non tutti riescono a percepire.
