Monitors are lizards which form part of the reptilian order Squamata, sharing it with the snakes and the amphisbaenians. There are about forty species of monitor, including the largest of all living lizards, the Komodo Dragon, which can reach a length of 10 ft / 3 m. While the Savannah Monitor does not reach that size, it can be said to possess all the attributes of these giant lizards in convenient and compact form.
