This book is a revised version of a masters thesis which was presented at the department of linguistics at the university of Innsbruck. It provides an interdisciplinary approach to the rhetorical representation of American core values in the speeches of George W. Bush. In the first part of the book the concept and process of presidential speechwriting are discussed A broad overview of the disciple is given in order to provide a basis for the analysis part of the book. In a next step different value theories are introduced and, especially, the values of compassionate conservatism are highlighted as relevant for discussion. Philosophical as well as sociological approaches towards a study of values are represented in this part of the book. In the analysis section a corpus of 61 speeches is deconstructed which aims at showing problematic aspects of political communication that is based on argumentation with values. Furthermore, the stylistic means employed in order to convey such values are emphasized. Conservative value catchphrases such as freedom, justice, peace etc. are placed into the context of their appearance in the presidential speeches and their function within this context is pointed out.
