It all started as an amateur in The Dramatic Society "The Fighters" in Lisbon, where she practiced table tennis. she debuted professionally in the opera "The Seamstress of the Cathedral," premiered in 1943 in Porto, written by Arnaldo Leite and Hector Campos Monteiro, with names like Antonio Silva, Josefina Silva, Antonio Vilar and Costinha who also starred in such operetta. The play was a success and Valentim de Carvalho invited her to record. After her marriage to Professor Julio Machado Vaz de Sousa, grandson of ex-president, Bernardino Machado, she moved to Porto, but always commuting to Lisbon, when required by work. She tried getting on the radio, but had been refused by the national radio station. Only in 1945 was she able to convince a jury to air her singing on the "The Molerinha". In 1946 she received the first prize in a Singing Contest and another first prize in the contest of the Light Radio Artists. She represented Portugal in the International Radio Festival in Morocco in 1953. Maria Clara was elected Queen of the Radio by the readers of Flame in the 1960s. Participated in performances of "Evenings for workers." She also made tours to Brazil. Some of her biggest hits are "Figueira da Foz," "Zé Aperta O Laço" and "Hás-de Voltar." She also worked at the Theatre of Comedy and participated in the movie "Three Mirrors". She died at the age of 85.
