Christopher Marlowe (Canterbury, 1564-Londres, 1593), poète dramatique anglais, est l'un des grands élisabéthains et le plus important devancier de Shakespeare : Tamerlan le Grand (1587), Le Juif de Malte (1589), Édouard II (v. 1592).

En 1588, il transpose le récit mythique de Faust. Empreint de l'esprit de la Renaissance, son Faust exalte le triomphe de la raison et la quête du savoir, mais finit, au terme de sa vie, par implorer le ciel de sauver son âme.
