Description
Stories of nymphs, gods and magicians: Jean-Philippe Rameau's 250th anniversary of Handel and Vivaldi's operas are in the classical charts with their operas — but one of their greatest contemporaries is still waiting to match them: Jean-Philippe Rameau. The French composer, who died 250 years ago on 12 September 1764, was the creator of great musical dramas full of Baroque magic, immense emotional power and unprecedented orchestral colors — packed with the fantastic flair of ancient mythological material. Since the 1970s, there has been a Rameau revival — with many international productions and recordings. Nine of his operas and music from four other stage works are now appearing in a box. The abundance of participating artists is a leaderboard of the Baroque opera scene: conductors such as William Christie, John Eliot Gardiner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt or Marc Minkowski, vocal soloists such as Frederica von Stade, José van Dam or John Tomlinson, ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, English Baroque Soloists or Concentus Musicus nna. The recordings were made between 1974 and 2002. They document the creative power of a composer who had an impact until the 19th and 20th centuries. Rameau, a friend of the philosopher Voltaire, went down in history as a brilliant creator of musical harmony. After years as an organist, he only introduced his first opera to the stage at the age of 50. Richard Wagner and Claude Debussy still saw him as a role model — both because of his orchestral handling and because of the desire for sound experiment that extends far beyond his time. “Thanks to the excellent recording, this edition is ideal for Rameau beginners as well as advanced players.” - Fono Forum
