Lorsque Chopin, au milieu des années 1830, intitule «ballade» son opus 23, il établit par là même la ballade pour piano comme nouveau genre musical, régulièrement repris à sa suite, par exemple par Brahms, Liszt et Grieg. L’idée de mettre en musique un événement dramatique et mystique fictif intéressait particulièrement Schumann le romantique. Il s’exprime avec enthousiasme sur l’œuvre: «J’ai une nouvelle ballade de Chopin. Elle me paraît être son œuvre génialissime (et non banalement géniale).» Notre édition séparée est extraite de l’édition révisée des «Ballades» (HN 862).
