Albert Schweitzer, teologo protestante e musicista, partì missionario e in un appassionato sforzo di imitazione di Cristo si diede alla cura della popolazione africana fondando un ospedale (a Lambaréné, nel Congo francese). Divenne, nel mondo, simbolo della generosa dedizione ai malati di lebbra. Fu a causa di questo fascino che un grande romanziere di formazione cattolica come Gilbert Cesbron volle dedicargli questo dramma teatrale. Nei tre personaggi del dramma (il dottore, il costruttore, il missionario) si esprimono tre modi di intendere la promozione umana e l'esito della carità. La figura di padre Carlo emerge per maggiore umiltà e ragionevolezza. Nell'amicizia e nella differenza tra lui e Schweitzer è proposto il tema profondo dell'opera.
