Er stand unter dem Einfluss hellenistischer Dichtung, aber trotz mannigfacher inhaltlicher und formaler Anklänge ist seine charakteristische Individualität, sein respektlos-zarter, »moderner« Ton in allen bedeutenden Gedichten vernehmbar. Und es ist kein Wunder, dass er in der europäischen Literatur viele (heimliche) Nachahmer fand - und seit über 2000 Jahren immer wieder neue (junge) Leser.
