Jose Carreras
(born. Barcelona, 5th December 1946) Tenor
After study at the Barcelona Conservatory he sang Ismaele in Nabucco in Barcelona. He took part in a London concert performance of Donizetti's Maria Stuarda in 1971. His American debut was in 1972, and he subsequently sang at the Met, at Covent Garden and other leading houses.
His sweet timbre and pure phrasing have made him one of the most popular lyric tenors of his generation.
Carreras has been much admired in recent times for his courageous defeat of potentially terminal leukemia a few years ago. He has found a new popular audience through his memorable leading part in Bernstein's up-dated version of "West Side Story" along side Kiri Te Kanawa.
In 1990 "The Three Tenors" confirmed his status as one of the three most popular male tenors in the world.
