La Galli Holding ha provato a espandersi. Ha vinto un appalto, i lavori inizieranno presto, ma la stretta delle banche si fa sempre più feroce. Il vecchio proprietario rischia molto a causa di imperscrutabili regole bancarie, di tassi di interesse che gli lievitano sotto gli occhi e di finanzieri senza scrupoli, e con il signor Galli rischiano anche i suoi dipendenti: muratori, ingegneri, manovali, contabili. L'avvocato Pugliatti è a un punto morto della sua carriera. Troppo idealista, s'è bruciato i clienti migliori, mentre i privati che continuano a rivolgersi a lui finiscono spesso per non pagare la parcella. La crisi economica attanaglia anche loro, come l'intera società: è il denaro, ormai, a mancare, drenato quasi tutto nelle pance delle banche, che fanno affari su affari speculando sui proventi del lavoro reale delle aziende.
