In a playing career of over 30 years Raymond Burley has become one of the UK s most experienced and consummate guitarists. Alongside a successful solo career, he has been active in many ensemble combinations performing with the likes of mezzo-soprano Jacqueline Fox, harpsichordists Stephen Bell and Richard Leigh Harris, violinist Michael Bochmann, percussionist Keith Fairbairn, flautist Jennifer Stinton and Academy Award-winning English actress Dame Peggy Ashcroft. On a larger scale Raymond Burley has worked with some of the UK s finest orchestras including the BBC Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic and the Philharmonia. In 2001 a fortuitous encounter between Raymond Burley and Gordon Giltrap - followed by a brief jam session - led to the formation of the duo Double Vision. Some very successful concerts followed including one at the Purcell Room at London s South Bank Centre. The success of these performances persuaded them to carry on the collaboration, the result being the release of the duo s first CD. Classical Guitar magazine commented, "Anyone who has doubts as to whether the amalgamation of nylon and steel string guitars and/or the partnership of a classically trained musician with a supremely individual folk artist would work, has only to listen to this glorious new recording from two players who are both widely recognised as being highly skilled individual performers in their own right." That collaboration makes Raymond Burley the ideal candidate for this project of presenting Gordon Giltrap s compositions in classical arrangements - an enterprise which has never previously been attempted on this scale.
