The Collectif des Personnes Infectées et Affectées par le VIH/SIDA (CAPES+), created in 2008 and accredited in 2009, is a non-profit association coordinating associations of people living with HIV in Burundi. Its vision is to promote the autonomy and healthy aging of PLWHA thanks to innovative treatments. Its actions are based on four pillars: prevention, psychosocial care, socio-economic advocacy and monitoring-evaluation. From 2023 to the present day, in addition to its regular activities, CAPES+ implements Community Led Monitoring (CLM) financed by PEPFAR/USAID via FHI360/EpiC and COVID-19 by UNDP. The organization operates through a five-organ governance structure and collaborates with public and international partners (Government of Burundi, UNAIDS, UNDP, USAID, etc.). Despite the progress made, challenges remain, notably the lack of appropriate logistical and communication resources. CAPES+ recommends strengthening community strategies and socio-economic empowerment for a sustainable response to HIV, in line with the Burundi Vision 2040-2060.
