Costance Briscoe è nata a Londra nel 1957 da genitori immigrati giamaicani, prima di sei figli. Da allora è sempre stata maltrattata dalla madre, sia fisicamente sia psicologicamente, per il solo fatto di essere considerata "brutta". Regolarmente picchiata, lasciata senza cibo, disperata, Costance si rivolge autonomamente ai servizi sociali per essere presa in custodia, e quando il tentativo fallisce tenta il suicidio bevendo candeggina.
