Caerwent Roman Town

0 - Default Title
Description
The quiet Monmouthshire village of Caerwent was once Venta Silurum — the largest centre of civilian population in Roman Wales. This 56-page guidebook is packed with site and artefact images, maps and plans and reconstruction drawings. It begins with an introduction to the history of the Roman town and a description of life within its walls. A tour of the visible remains in Cadw’s care follows. These include: the impressive Roman walls — the best-preserved defences of any Roman town in Britain; the forum-basilica, the centre of civic life in Roman Caerwent; a Romano-Celtic temple; the shops and houses at Pound Lane; and two fine courtyard houses. The guidebook also contains a short section on the nearby Llanmelin Wood Hillfort, which is also in Cadw’s care.
