Extract from the CD notes: "Despite all the reversions to classical styles still evident in his fourth symphony in E minor, opus 98, this work embodies variational development in a purity of form never before attained by Brahms. No wonder, with such exemplary advancement, that Arnold Schoenberg designated his "reactionary" colleague as a progressive thinker. The fourth symphony was composed during 1884 and 1885 in Murzzuschlag and performed for the first time on 25 October 1885 in Meiningen, conducted by the composer himself. It was received with mixed reactions. At that time very few people appreciated just how radically the composer had overridden classical symphonic forms, or what possibilities he had opened up for the future..."
