The investigations summarized in this book led to the creation of new theories about the origins and historical development of the katas spread in the Shōtōkan dōjō by the Funakoshi family. In the fruit of this work lasting two decades, the author reveals the original names, main features and Chinese styles, from which originate all the katas trained in Shōtōkan and Shōtōkai stylistic systems, but also present in Wadō-ryū, Shitō-ryū, Shōrin-ryū and partially in other styles coming from the tradition of Naha-te like the Gōjū-ryū.
