Description
Although best remembered for his definitive portrayals of Frankenstein and the Mummy, Boris Karloff appeared in a wide variety of horror and suspense films. This three-disc retrospective includes Night Key (1937), starring Karloff as a security system inventor kidnapped by a gang of burglars and forced to help them commit robberies, while in 1939's Tower of London, Basil Rathbone is Richard III and Karloff is his clubfooted enforcer; Vincent Price co-stars as the Duke of Clarence. Nominated for the Best Art Direction Oscar in 1944, The Climax features Karloff as a madman obsessed with a beautiful opera singer (Susanna Foster). The Strange Door (1951) stars Charles Laughton as a manipulative nobleman, and Karloff as a disloyal servant plotting to free his boss's helpless prisoners. In 1952's The Black Castle Karloff is mesmerizing as a doctor who risks his own life to save the captives of a mad count (Stephen McNally).
